Outreach on Take Me Home program targets seniors in celebration of
September as Senior Safety Awareness Month

( Akron ) … Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh is once again
declaring September as Senior Safety Awareness Month, and is celebrating the
month by focusing additional efforts on seniors who may need extra help in a law
enforcement situation.

Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh said, “This month my office will be involved in a
number of activities around Summit County to bring awareness to safety issues as
they relate to our older citizens.  One of those efforts will be once again partnering
with Sheriff Drew Alexander to reach out to senior citizens and their families about
the Take Me Home database.  Take Me Home is a program Sheriff Drew Alexander
and I announced last April.  The program has focused on children with disabilities
who would have difficulty communicating vital information – such as their name and
address – should they become lost.   This month, we will be focusing on reaching out
to senior citizens and their families about registering in the Take Me Home
database.  Senior citizens who could become lost or confused and unable to
communicate their name or address – such as those with Alzheimer’s or dementia –
are good candidates for the Take Me Home database.”

Take Me Home is a database maintained by the Summit County Prosecutor and
Sheriff’s Offices.  Currently, some 75 individuals –children and adults with disabilities
and senior citizens with Alzheimer’s that impact their ability to communicate – are
registered.  Fortunately, every law enforcement department in Summit County is an
active partner in the program, helping to populate the database with photos and
contact information.  In addition, volunteers from the Greater Akron Autism Society of
America have worked all summer to register individuals.

Walsh continued, “We are excited about the progress we have made on the
Take Me Home program, and want to ensure our older citizens are aware that this
tool is available to them and their families.  This month we will focus on reaching out
to seniors through assisted living facilities and senior centers to connect them with
Take Me Home.”
